Description
This unique figural carving depicts an Ottoman Sultan of the era, likely Mahmud II (1808-1839) or Abdülmecit I (1839-1861). The bowl is fitted with sterling silver at each end, with a stylized maker’s mark or hallmark of [mJ]. The bowl may have original had a silver lid that has been lost to time.
The stem is made from cherry wood fashioned into a 21 inch long tube, which was popular at the time. The wood texture and knots of the wood is easily seen and felt by touch. Adding to the authenticity of this piece is the antler horn used to make the mouthpiece and band at the opposite end of the stem.
